OAA’s Sierra Leone project works with Peace Pals Education Network, a local NGO that works with children orphaned or made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS who cannot afford education due to poverty. OAA Sierra Leone strives to supplement a decent education for these youths with games and sports activities, which helps in deviating youngsters’ minds from their traumatic situation. There is still a strong belief among some Sierra Leoneans that HIV/AIDS does not exist. In addition, the education sector was one of the worst hit during the country’s decade-long civil conflict—hundreds of educational facilities were destroyed, resulting in many children having been deprived of their right to education. With the advent of peace, the need to rejuvenate the educational sector for children orphaned or made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS becomes extremely important.
